Question by jeeeow: Why are so many pet owners clueless about their pet's microchip?
I work at a vet clinic, and every so often people bring in stray animals they've found to check for microchips. I can't tell you how often there have been microchips, but no owner information is registered with that microchip #. It happened twice this week-- and one couple who I managed to find online with a lost pet ad on craigslist even said in their ad that the dog was microchipped. Yet they seemed unable to understand that the microchip is UTTERLY WORTHLESS unless you actually go online or call the 800 number and give the microchip company your contact information.
Now, I wonder if it's shelters that implant the chips, then inadequately explain the way it works when the pet is adopted.
Any folks out there with a microchipped dog? Did you register it?!
P.S. A little secret I found out: My dog has a HomeAgain Microchip . It's very difficult to find this in writing on the website, but you don't need to pay the silly .99 annual membership fee to keep your registration active. The fee is just for all the worthless bells and whistles. They'll keep your contact information on hand and available at no cost.

Mayhaps the vet should explain the chip better then?
I understand how clueless people can be, but sometimes things arent explained fully so they dont know any better.
