Turkey as a holiday destination

Turkey is an increasingly popular tourist destination and it is thought that as many as 30m people could visit this year. This is not surprising really, because the country offers so much that people look for from a holiday. The food is great, the climate is excellent, the beaches are beautiful and there are plenty of historical sites to go and visit.

Turkey's climate is a pleasant one, particularly on the Mediterranean where temperatures don't drop too low in winter, nor get too high in summer. All the same, spring and autumn are probably the best times to visit as the weather is good and most destinations are generally slightly quieter.

Istanbul is a year-round destination, particularly for shorter city breaks. Turkey's largest city is easy to get to and has a host of historic tourist attractions that warrant a visit. The Blue Mosque is world-renowned, while Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern are also worth a visit.

The Mediterranean coast is also popular with visitors, particularly around Antalya. This clifftop town is surrounded by mountains, but also boasts fantastic beaches, which are the biggest draw, while museums and ancient monuments mean there is plenty to keep tourists occupied.

Other Mediterranean destinations include Bodrum and Marmaris. The former features Bodrum Castle, which is a big draw, as well as being near the site of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world - the Mausoleum, constructed for one of its rulers. Marmaris is best known for its sailing and diving, although there are a few historic sights as well.

One spectacular area that is worth a visit is Cappadocia, further inland. This region has been formed as a result of wind and rain eroding a lava-covered plain that is situated between extinct volcanoes. Over thousands of years, intriguing rock structures have formed to create a unique landscape which also features underground cities and cave churches.
