You wouldn't think that these finches would need such a large space because of their size. A typical bird will only grow to be about four inches as an adult. However, it is used to flying around open grasslands in the wild, so this is where a large space will come in handy.

They may have white or light colored variants on their feathers with black markings all around. They will also sport spots or stripes along their wings or belly. Males in particular are known to be much more colorful.

Along with their color, they also have a unique set of calls and songs. Finches are much more vocal than typical bird species, so anyone who's looking for a quiet pet should look elsewhere. The chirps will actually start of as short beeps, but it will increase in length and in volume over a few minutes until the bird breaks out into song. Others may also join in the singing to create a much more complex harmonization. As with their colors and markings, the males usually have a larger selection of calls.

Their social behavior usually only extends to other birds in the flock. They don't display the same behavior with humans. Don't think that you can normal pet or groom them anytime. Some people have had success with training them to be more accustomed to the sight and touch of humans, but this shouldn't be expected of in every case.

One unfortunate characteristic of these birds is that they are not very fond of human contact. Don't expect to pet them or hold them in your hand. If you want the birds to be happy, just leave them alone with other birds. A good space is needed to keep the finches happy. The minimum space required by any of them is at least twenty inches across. This is to give them enough space to hop and fly around. They are very active creatures, so the more space that you can give them, the better off they are.

If you can provide larger aviaries outdoors, this will be a much better option, although you will have to consider placing an appropriate shade for all of them. The space between the bars must also be small enough so that they won't fly out. The minimum recommended space is around half an inch in between.

Larger aviaries that you can place outdoors will be much appreciated by your pets. However, you must consider the space between the bars to keep them inside. This should be at least half an inch between bars. Metal or wood cages are okay, but brass should not be used because of the danger of toxins. You can also add swings in the finch cages to keep them happy.
