The Purpose Of Business Art

A brolly in one hand and an attach case in another, a male silhouette facing backwards can be seen in the print, he is wearing a trench coat and a bowler hat. Something about him sparks intrigue. When you look at the image, what you are seeing is a corporate advertisement.

The person in the picture is an architect and he works for this new company as their vice president and general manager and according to him, they used this image as a representation of their position in Canadian commerce. Businesses call for advertising needs and when it comes to this, late '70s architecture maintains the stand that you can market anything to the extremes without damaging the art involved.

There have been numerous changes since then when it came to the concepts of art and architecture where creating pretty things is no longer the sole concern of the people who make them. They're the new hybrids. Motor mouthed businessmen, filling their own sails for their mercantile odyssey, but reinforcing their claims with some of the most vivid, trenchant graphic art produced in Winnipeg today.

Taking pictures was the pastime for these two partners. Starting out with pictures, they have turned these into lithographs, graphic forms, silk screens, metal etchings, and fiber work. Before they became partners, they were both employed in a local architectural firm. There was an immediate marriage of minds.

The company was selling enough then to constitute a business but none of the contributors was prepared to formalize it. Because of the company, the both of them were able to visit Vancouver for a graphics exhibition. One partner said that he was so convinced that what they were doing was a viable commercial entity, that he said he'd put up $3,000 front money of his own to produce a brochure of their work and another $2,000 as back up.

Unlike the rest of the Winnipeg establishments, the two partners will be focusing on putting more forms of art, graphic, and print in their brochures. Aside from this, they also work on promotional printing, posters, architectural photography and models, logos, T shirt design, coasters, menus, and matchbook covers and they refer to these as potatoes. Here, a big portion of their earnings are sourced from the work that they do creating custom art for lobbies and rooms of hotel chains, commercial aircrafts, government buildings, trains, head and branch offices of corporations.

Usually, company offices are made more presentable with the murals or silk screen serigraphs used by the partners and they do this together with the idea generation for advertising materials. When they make their custom fine art for their clients, they combine it with graphic design and this becomes their edge. Those who belong to the custom corporate art industry know very well the kind of determination it takes to survive. They are able to use graphic design to their advantage. Part of the customers that they have now are part of a huge insurance company, a railroad, hotels, two major Canadian banks, various federal and provincial buildings, and airline companies.
