Caring for Exotic Pets

Whenever one decides to keep an animal as a pet it is vital that you understand the responsibilities that will automatically come with the animal concerned. Many people are choosing to keep exotic pets such as reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates because these particular animals are really interesting and unusual. However, it is essential to understand that pets like these have specific needs and requirements which, unless met properly, will mean that the animal will suffer and probably not live for very long. Many exotic pets end up in the care of the RSPCA because overly eager people thought that they'd be really simple to keep.

Reptiles Instead of having fur or feathers reptiles have scales and are cold-blooded. Examples would be snakes, lizards and tortoises and there are a great many different types to choose from. Reptiles require special feeding and special housing and it is essential that prior to purchasing one you first find out all the necessary information you need to be able to provide the care the animal will need. The main thing to remember is that you will need to replicate as closely as possible the animal's natural habitat, which means that certain items will need to be purchased. Make sure that you know exactly what you will need to ensure that your exotic pet will have what it needs to enjoy a happy and long life time.

Amphibians As with reptiles these are cold-blooded creatures that require water, especially if you are going to breed them. Frogs, newts and salamanders all fall in this category. You will need to provide an enclosure that is as close to the natural habitat as possible as well as a diet that resembles the one they would have in the wild. Before you decide to keep an amphibious animal as a pet you need to make sure that you are prepared for the animal's needs and requirements as they are very specific.

Invertebrates An invertebrate is a class of animal that does not have a backbone and these creatures can make extremely unusual and fascinating exotic pets. Spiders, scorpions, even insects like the Praying Mantis are all examples of invertebrates. They require specific levels of heating and lighting just like the reptilian and amphibious pets do as well as proper humidity. They need to have the right foods to ensure that they receive the proper nutrients they need. It is important to remember that while some invertebrates such a Tarantula for example, can be handled, the majority should only be observed within their enclosure.

Keeping exotic pets is a great undertaking especially for those who live in an apartment because these types of pets do not require extensive exercise. However, each animal within the above categories has specific requirements when it comes to housing and diet. Also, some cannot be kept without a valid permit. It is vital therefore to ensure that prior to purchasing an exotic animal as a pet you first determine the requirements that you will need to meet both for the animal's well-being as well as your own.
