Tips On Hints On Bathing A Puppy For The First Time

Bathing a puppy for the first time is exciting. Since your pup will be tiny, you can give him a bath in your kitchen sink or bathtub. It will be easier to control your pup in small confined spaces for his first few baths to prevent them from running away. Place a rubber mat at the bottom of the sink or bathtub so your pup will not slip once he gets wet.

Purchase dog shampoo from the pet store, preferably one meant for puppies. Do not use human shampoo even if they are mild. The shampoo we use is not ideal for dogs because they have different Ph levels on their skin. Although these dog shampoos are safe for animals, you should still keep shampoo away from their eyes.

Use slightly warm water to bathe your puppy. Dogs, especially young ones, are highly sensitive to hot or warm water. Test your water like you would an infants feeding bottle before you give milk to a baby. If the water feels warm on your hand, it is probably too hot for your pup. Before wetting your pup, spray some water from your sinks hose on your arm to test the temperature.

Fill the bottom part of your sink with slightly warm water to keep your pet from feeling cold. Your pups head should stay above the water. Wet your pup well and then pour shampoo over his back and lather it all over his body. Leave the head for later. Do not forget to clean your dogs tail, belly, neck, and paws too. Lather on the shampoo well.

After your finished soaping your pups body, only then will you wet his head and shampoo it. Make sure water does not enter his eyes, nose and ears. Keep his nose down to prevent water from going into his eyes and nose. Rinse your pups head and then the rest of his body including the tail and paws. Drain the water from the sink as you rinse him.

Once you wet a dogs head, they tend to shake off water. You can avoid getting yourself or the whole kitchen wet by placing a towel on your puppy's body as you clean his head. After he is totally rinsed off, towel-dry his head first and work down to his body, tail and feet. Do not panic if your pup starts to shiver, it will be a normal reaction especially for the first few baths.

Use a blow dryer on low heat to dry your pet quickly. Keep the dryers nozzle about 1-1/2 feet from his body. Pups are sensitive to heat and a blow dryer can easily burn their skin. Rub the towel on your pup as you blow dry him till he is dry.

Bathing your dog too often may strip your puppy's natural oils off his skin and fur. This may lead to dog dandruff that becomes apparent when you brush their fur. Bathe them only when they become too dirty or start to smell bad.
