Some Features of The Three Types of Poodle

Breeders from countries all over the world have developed three basic types of Poodle dogs.

Poodles Dogs Of The Standard Size

It may seem unusual for most people, but the dogs of the standard type of poodles can grow up to be quite large when they are adults. The poodle dogs can be framed in the standard type if their height, measured at the shoulder, is over fifteen inches, as per the height standards established by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but there are many poodles measuring twenty inches or more.

The poodle dogs of the standard type are loved by numerous owners. The poodle dogs of all types are intelligent, friendly, proud, and fiercely loyal pets. Unfortunately, the poodle dogs of the standard type carry some heavy genetic burdens. They are the largest type of poodles, but their life span is only around twelve years, several years shorter than the smaller Poodle types. Veterinarian statistics show that around 40% of the poodle dogs of the standard type develop different varieties of cancers that lead to their deaths.

Standard poodles also run high chance of being born with Addison's disease, a hormonal disorder which, if untreated, can lead to cardiac arrest and death. Like all larger dogs, standard poodles are also at risk for hip dysplasia.

The Miniature Type Of Poodles

According to AKC standards, miniature poodles stand taller than ten inches at the shoulder, but no taller than fifteen inches

The poodles of this type fit well for apartment dwellers. They use to bark at strangers, making good watchdogs.

As all the types of poodles, the miniature type dogs go along well with other dogs and with humans of all ages. These poodles live around fifteen years. Like the standard poodles, the miniature type dogs are prone to genetic health problems, like epilepsy or seizure disorder, eye diseases leading to blindness and knee problems.

Toy Poodles

The smallest of all poodles, the toy type dogs don't measure more than ten inches at the shoulder. The smallest toy poodle variety is known as the tea cup poodle. The toy poodles have a life span of around eighteen years, the longest of all Poodle types.

The Coats Of The Poodle Dogs

The dogs of the poodle breed can present two types of coats. The most common show poodles have curly coats.

There are also poodles with corded coats. Not many poodles having corded coats are known in the United States.

The Colors Of The Poodle Coats

Poodles are usually black or white, but you can also see brown, apricot, silver, beige, cream, blue, and even red poodles. According to the American Kennel Club show regulations, poodles must have uniform colored coats.

Not only are poodles truly charming dogs with their innate intelligence and friendliness, they also come in every size and color you could imagine. With so many choices, it should be easy for you to find the right poodle friend.

The Standard, Miniature and Toy are the three Poodle types. All types of poodle are intelligent, friendly, proud, and fiercely loyal pets. The coats of all Poodle types are mostly colored in black or white.
