A Moving Noise Violation - Driving While Barking

Going on long drives with your pet can be very enjoyable but if your dog starts barking uncontrollably, then you're in for one noisy ride. Anything that goes rushing past the windows can excite your dog and get him in defense mode, thus barking incessantly.

Shouting at your dog to quiet him down is not effective at all. To your dog, your yelling is the same as his barking, therefore he is encouraged to bark even more. Yelling at your dog only adds to his excitement.

You will need some patience to train your dog to be well behaved when in the car. These tips will hep you contraol your dog's barking when on the road:

1. Be a role model. When choosing music, go with soft and soothing tunes. Avoid loud heavy metal. Although dogs can enjoy a huge variety of styles and genres, loud music can agitate them. When your dog gets excited, try to stay calm and cool. Comfort your dog by patting his head and gently stroking his fur, while talking to him in a soft voice. This will usually result in your dog wanting more of the attention, and forgetting about his excitement and constant barking.

2. If your dog can bark on command, then you can teach him to stop on command. Observe your dog to see what agitates or excites him to cause him to bark annoyingly. Once you figure out what that trigger is, you have to do it yourself, saying "speak" before you do the trigger. After several tries, your dog will understand that "speak" means bark. Then teach him the command "enough". When he has learned this, then you can easily stop him from barking when necessary.

3. A crate is useful when taking a dog out in your car. He can sit in the crate while you drive somewhere. Your dog's view of the window will partially be obscured and this will stop excessive barking. This is suitable for small to medium sized dogs.
