The Labrador Retriever Originates From The Island Of Newfoundland

The Saint John's water dog, which was a crossbreed between the Newfoundland dog and a native water dog on the island of Newfoundland, that is now extinct, was the ascendant of the Labrador retriever breed. The dog breeders from England and among them the famous Earl of Malmesbury wanted to distinguish this new breed from the Newfoundland breed and named it Labrador. Maybe the most distinguishing feature of the Labrador breed is its' love for water, the dogs of this breed being used for a long time by fishermen to help them with the nets, by grabbing the floating corks at their end and dragging them towards the shore, reason because they called it the Labrador retriever.

The temperament of Labrador is one of good balance as well as remarkable versatility and it is able to adapt to many functions as well as makes for a very good pet dog. The Labrador is very intelligent and obedient and does not have bad traits that are found in other variety of breeds and they have aptly been named retrievers to emphasize their excellent retrieving abilities. They love to hold objects but are prone to chew objects which, after training, they are able to learn to abstain from. Its coat can repel water and is thus useful for waterfowl hunting and the like.

Physical Features

When learning about the physical appearance of the Labrador, one finds its medium size and athletic prowess are essential for its retrieving abilities.
